House moving to result in planned power cuts on Thursday

City officials  on Wednesday notified residents along north Fourth and Third streets that their electricity  would be cut off for a period of time on Thursday while a house is moved through the area by Scrib's House Moving and Heavy Hauling.

The moving began on Wednesday for a  large house located on the south side of E Street between Eighth and Ninth streets

David City Public Schools receives $10,000 to foster healthy lifestyles

Results of last year's health screenings in the schools showed that nearly 40 percent of David City Public Schools students are obese or overweight, according to standards put forth by the Centers for Disease Control.

Lori Robinson, RN and school nurse for David City Elementary, said that she had to help change that statistic. She decided to apply for the BlueHealth Advantage Wellness Grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska to help fund DC ReCharge, a program designed to curb obesity.

RCPS takes no action on merger, land transfer petitions

Further action on the proposed merger of Rising City and Shelby public schools districts will likely wait for a meeting later this month.

At the RCPS board meeting Monday night, the board went into executive session to discuss the issues of reorganization, interlocal agreements and the ongoing request by property owners to transfer land from Rising City's district to David City.

After a brief discussion of the district's 2010-11 budget, the board went into executive session.

Shelby-RCPS merger plan on the table

Rising City Public Schools will graduate its last class in May, but the proposed Shelby-Rising City merger plan would keep its buildings in operation five more years if the new district has the students to fill it.

Specifically, the district needs 45 students - 15 each in sixth, seventh and eighth grades - to keep the building open.

That is one of the provisions of the proposed merger "Petition and Plan" under consideration by the Shelby and Rising City school boards.

The Rising City Public Schools Board tabled a request Aug. 12 by landowners who want to transfer their land to David City Public Schools for valuation and taxation purposes.

School's in session: Time to check for head lice

LINCOLN - Now that school's begun, parents should check their young children for head lice on at least a weekly basis, according to Dr. Annette Bredthauer, the state's medical entomologist with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

"Head lice are common among elementary school students because they have a lot of physical contact with their classmates," Dr. Bredthauer said.
