A season-long thorn in the David City Legion Juniors’ side ended their season Tuesday.
Valparaiso defeated David City 5-3 for the Class B Area 4 district title at Plum Creek Park in Seward.
The game followed David City’s 8-5 comeback victory over Valparaiso earlier Tuesday.
David City finishes the season with a 19-9 record. The team lost four out of six games to Valparaiso and three out of four times to Stromsburg-Osceola-Shelby.
The story of the deciding game was the performance of Valparaiso pitcher Nathan Brenner, who took a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning.
Derek Worm broke up Brenner’s no-hit bit with a leadoff double in the fifth inning.
Brenner faced one over the minimum through six, thanks to double plays turned by the Val defense in the third and fourth innings.
Valparaiso didn’t commit an error in the contest.
David City had two huge errors, one scored as a hit, that proved costly.
A two-out, nobody-on popup off the bat of Bo Prater dropped between the shortstop and first baseman in the first inning.
That opened the door for two runs to score.
A three-base throwing error at third brought in two more runs in the fourth, giving Valparaiso a 5-0 lead.
David City tried to rally with two outs in the seventh.
Nate Roh and Curtis Blowers had RBI-singles. Michael Buresh scored on a wild pitch.
Brenner got Tyler Stastny to ground out to second to end the game.
The Val pitcher allowed three hits, struck out six and walked two to get the win.
Aaron Rerucha struck out four over two innings, but was tagged with the loss. Jordan Vavrina allowed one earned run on two hits over four innings of relief.
He struck out four and walked six.
David City almost didn’t force a second game, trailing 5-3 after five innings.
A leadoff walk eventually spelled two-out trouble for Valparaiso in the top of the sixth.
Derek Worm doubled in the tying runs. Worm scored the lead run on a Vavrina double.
Buresh singled in Vavrina.
Will McCawley doubled in Nate Roh for insurance in the seventh.
Rerucha pitched a complete-game victory. He allowed just one earned run on six hits. He struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter. He retiring the last eight hitters he faced (five by strikeout) with the ball never leaving the infield.
