The filing deadline for non-incumbents passed at 5 p.m. Monday, with only two races developing on the May 11 primary election ballot, the County Clerk's office reported.
Mayor Dana Trowbridge opted not to try for a second term. As of Monday, three candidates have stepped forward: Alan Zavodny, Carol Brehm and John Irons. The primary will determine which two will advance to the November election.
At the county level, all incumbents filed for re-election, with only one challenger stepping forward in a primary race. Diane Schroeder will challenge County Supervisor Irv Cidlik in the District 7 Democratic primary. No Republicans filed from that district.
In District 5, both incumbent Democrat Bill Kozisek and newly filed Gerald Kosch, a Republican, will advance to the fall election.
In other City filings:
Don Prochaska will face John P. Vandenberg in the fall for the Ward 3 Council seat. Incumbent, Ward 3 Councilman Nick Hein, did not file for re-election.
Incumbent Bill Scribner has filed for a second term in his Ward 2 seat, and he will face challenger Jeff Yates.
Councilman Bill Yindrick, appointed in 2006, filed for election to Ward 1; on Monday, Ruddy Svoboda filed to challenge Yindrick in the fall.
The officially non-partisan City Council and school board seats needed to have more than two candidates for each opening in order to be placed on the primary ballot.
The school boards of David City and East Butler will see new faces next year with seats to be filled at the November election.
At David City, Board President Vic Thoendel decided not to seek another term, as did Board Member Linda Carlson.
Board Member Linda Vandenberg filed for re-election, along with newcomers Stephanie Summers and Nathan W. Olson.
At East Butler, incumbents Kent Rezac, James L. Hlavac and Thomas Pesek decided not to run.
Five candidates have stepped forward for the East Butler election in the fall: Debra A. Meyer, Robin M. Sullivan, Todd A. Pelan, Mark A. Janak, and Megan E. Kozisek will vie for the three vacancies.
Seven candidates would have been required for East Butler and David City, respectively, before the names would be placed on a primary ballot.
Candidates for other offices have more time to think about their decision before the fall election.
The filing deadline is July 15 for incumbents for townships, villages, Class II Schools (Rising City), educational service units and public power districts. Non-incumbents must file by Aug. 2 for non-incumbents.
