Council kills zoning change for campground

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 - 11:40 am

At its Jan. 13 meeting, the City Council voted 5-1 against an amendment to the city's zoning regulations, which would have allowed campgrounds as a conditional use in single-familyi residential areas.
The voting on the matter was fairly swift after an hour-long public hearing on the topic, and more specifically, how it related to the effort by local businessman Jerry Roh to build a pull-through RV park at the corner of Oak and E streets on the city's west edge.

Roh arrived some time after the public testimony began.

He said that his development proposal had been under planning commission consideration for six weeks. Bright yellow signs at the property notified the public that information was available at the City Office.

Roh said he thought the idea might have a solid future because he had not received any questions from the neighborhood where the 6-acre property is located.

He said that if the idea didn't work out, he would save the $5,000 he would need to invest to see if the business was viable.

Opponents of the zoning change said the city already has areas zoned for campground use and should limit development to those areas. While campgrounds would attract traveling workers and vacationers, they said, the facility also may attract sex offenders, drug dealers and others who would threaten the safety and lower the property values of the west David City neighborhood.
