The David City girls' basketball team was less than a second away from its second victory of the season, but a foul call changed that.
Erica Long's two free throws with two-tenths of a second lifted Omaha Roncalli to a 45-44 win over the Scouts in the consolation game of the David City Holiday Tournament.
"We played much better today. We were right there. We just couldn't finish," David City Coach Amanda Novak said.
Long's free throws capped off a wild final 40 seconds.
Kala Kovar hit the front end of a one-and-one with 38.1 seconds left that would have put the Scouts (1-7) up by two. The free throw was wiped off when a Scout player was called for a lane violation by standing with part of her right foot in the lane before the ball was shot.
Long hit a free throw with 29.9 seconds left to tie the score. Kovar rebounded and was fouled with 25.7 seconds left.
The senior hit both free throws to put the Scouts up 43-41, but Long scored on a driving shot with 17 seconds left to tie the score.
David City's Melanie Hecker was fouled with 7.3 seconds left on the clock. She made the first free throw. The Crimson Pride's Shannon Andresen rebounded when Hecker missed the second.
Long got the ball and the Scouts were unable to cut off her dribble. She drove well into two-point range, drawing the shooting foul just before time expired.
The senior took over for Roncalli (3-3) down the stretch. She scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the final three minutes, including two post-up baskets against a smaller defender.
Kovar heated up in the third quarter. She turned a steal into a layup and hit a three-pointer to give the Scouts a 27-21 lead midway through the third quarter.
The senior led David City with 19 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
The Scouts still led 39-34 on Hecker's jumper with 3:04 remaining before Long took over.
Justine Riha had 13 rebounds and nine points for the Scouts. Jasmine Clark added 11 rebounds. Hecker had four steals. Kacy Sutton had three assists and three steals.
Long also had nine rebounds and three steals for Roncalli. Andresen and Shannon Mulcahy added 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
David City is scheduled to visit Twin River Friday and host Milford Saturday. Tri-County will be in David City next Tuesday.
