No questions asked for return of flags

Monday, November 16, 2009 - 1:10 pm

The "Avenue of Flags" has been displayed  on the Butler County Courthouse lawn as a scene of inspiration on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Veteran's Day. Last week, someone was inspired to take four of the American flags after volunteers set them up on Nov. 10.

During the evning hours of Nov. 10 or the morning hours of Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, four flags and their aluminum poles were removed from the flag display,  Sheriff Mark Hecker reported.

The flags, which were donated to the American Legion by the families of deceased veterans, are flown to honor the veterans on patriotic holidays.  The display graces the west and south sides of the courthouse with about 300 flags, representing veterans from the nation's wars.

Anyone with information about the disappearance of the flags can call the sheriff's office at 402-367-7400, or Butler County Crimestoppers at 402-367-4545. Callers to Crimestoppers can remain anonymous.

Hecker said the responsible parties can return the flags with no questions asked.
