Piitz recognized for his music career

Leo Piitz of Brainard was inducted to the Sokol of Omaha Polka Hall of Fame on Sept. 13. He was inducted "In recognition of a Lifetime Achievement in the Field of Polka Music."

Piitz has played drums for over 67 years retiring in 2007. He has played with several bands over his career including: Golden Star, Math Slady, Six Fat Dutchman, Al Grebnick, Adolph Nemetz, Sparta Orchestra, Harry Czarnik, Dennis Wesely, Bud Comte, Ernie Kucera, Dean Hansen, Emil Herms, Kenny Schuda, Mark Vhylidal, Studio Trio, and The Leo Lonnie Orchestra.

His children and grandchildren are Willie Piitz of Columbus, Maria Lunde, Mathew and Bernita of Columbus and Lonnie and Kim Piitz, Suzie and Sylvia of Brainard.
