Letters July 30

Nothing good heard about mayor

I am totally for the recall on the mayor.
For many reasons. I have lived in David City for almost four years now and haven't heard any positive feedback about our mayor. I have been to a few city council meetings in which I believe our mayor has downgraded the citizens of David City. We elected the mayor to be a positive voice for our community and to guide us to be a great community.

The Dwight-Valparaiso Legion Seniors picked a good time to win their first tournament of the season.

On a night where offense was at a premium, Dwight-Val edged Wahoo 3-2 in eight innings for the Class B Area 4 district title at Legion Field in Geneva Wednesday morning.

Yes, Wednesday morning.

The victory, which wasn’t completed until after midnight, followed a 4-2
Wahoo victory that forced a one game, winner-take-all matchup for the title.

Soybean growers should be watching for soybean leaf defoliation

Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 7:21 am

LINCOLN -- Nebraska soybean growers may be noticing soybean defoliation in their fields. The culprit is most likely grasshoppers and/or bean leaf beetles, University of Nebraska-Lincoln specialists say.

Numerous reports have come in about grasshopper populations building along field edges and bean leaf beetle populations building in some areas of the state, mainly in the south, said Tom Hunt, UNL entomologist at the Haskell Agricultural Laboratory near Concord.

The Butler County Arts Council is very excited about the upcoming performance by DFunk at the 2nd Annual Musical Soiree on the Square. Based out of Lincoln, DFunk has become one of the most popular bands in the area, and has a lineup of musicians that is fantastic.

I talked with the band's bass player, Jamie Cox about the band, its members, and musical style.

City Council ends subcommittee trial

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 - 3:36 pm

It turns out that the City Council's six month trial period with subcommittee meetings only lasted five months.

The council ended the practice at the July 8 meeting.

Back in February, the City Council established subcommittees in place of the longstanding Committee of the Whole meetings held the last Monday each month.

The intention was to improve efficiency, increase public input and provide more specialized knowledge of department issues, among council members.

Letters to the Editor July 23

No good reason for recall
I think this recall is a personal attack against the mayor. I don't know the mayor, but I did vote for him. I don't like everything he has tried to do, but other things were obvious solutions and I wonder why we fight about them. Given the venom of the attacks, I think the last thing on the recall people's minds is policy or the welfare of the community.

Municipal Auditorium will be the site of a forum at 7 p.m. Friday, with Mayor Dana Trowbridge on hand to answer questions.

The mayor scheduled the meeting and paid for the auditorium rental in response to a recall effort launched against him on July 8

Steve Gaston, who filed the recall affidavit, has said he will not take part in the forum.

Attorney General: City notice was sufficient

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 - 2:58 pm

But "much better job" could have been done

The City Council did not violate the Open Meetings Act in June when the council discussed nine options for the future of police services in David City related to the sale of the local police station.

The city received a letter July 20 explaining that Attorney General Jon Bruning's office found no violation in regard to a two-part complaint.

County wants to lead low-tax charge

Thursday, July 23, 2009 - 8:31 am

The County Board of Supervisors hopes to take the sting out of higher property valuation assessments by keeping its property tax levy down.

"We can show the rest of the governmental bodies it is possible," said Supervisor Irv Cidlik at Monday's County Board meeting. "I want us to be the lead agency."

The county is still three months from approving the 2009-10 budget, but the preliminary numbers were encouraging.

A season-long thorn in the David City Legion Juniors’ side ended their season Tuesday.
