 Joining Witter Family Medicine: Cindy Heavican

Cindy Heavican, Family Nurse Practitioner, is joining Witter Family Clinic.

Cindy began her career as a licensed practical nurse in 1994. She completed her
Associate Degree in nursing in 1996, and has practiced as a registered nurse since that time. In 2006, Cindy graduated from UNMC with a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing. On April 30, 2009, she graduated from the Family Nurse Practitioner program with a Master's of Science Degree.

Vodicka, Swanson place for Shelby

The Shelby track team had a greater representation at this year's Class D State Track Meet, but it was the two who'd been there before who led the way.
Senior Kirk Vodicka and junior Derek Swanson earned their first-ever state meet medals.

Vodicka placed sixth in the shot put and discus. Swanson placed sixth in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump.

The two were the only area competitors from Class D schools to place at the meet.

East Butler girls shine at state

The fastest all-time girls 800 meter runner in Class C history is still in Butler County, but the location's moved a little farther east. East Butler junior Marissa Bongers broke the 15-year-old record set by David City's Jodi Dubs in winning the Class C 800 at Omaha Burke Stadium Saturday morning.

Washing pesticide contaminated clothing

It is the time of year when quite a bit of pesticides, especially herbicides, are applied in fields. Here are some reminders so everyone in the family stays safe.

Clothing worn during pesticide application can become contaminated, endangering the health of the wearer as well as others who might come in contact with the clothes or pesticide. Using proper laundering procedures can help avoid re-exposure to the applicator or exposure to other family members.

Examine traffic and immigration laws

The May 12 fatal traffic accident in Omaha involving Eleazar Rangel-Ochoa, a suspected illegal immigrant driving under a suspended license, has generated needed public attention.

Police allege that a vehicle driven by Rangel-Ochoa ran a right light and collided with a vehicle driven by Jayme Bluhm and carrying her three children. The accident claimed the life of one of the children, 4-year-old Josie, and injured the other family members.

Verizon, AT&T to swap assets

Second discrimination suit filed against Henningsen Foods

A second former employee of Henningsen Foods Inc. has filed a lawsuit claiming that illegal immigrants were favored over other workers at the egg processing plant. Meanwhile, the company says the allegations already have been dismissed by the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission.

Council puts DCPD building on the block

The City Council voted 6-0 on May 13 night to move forward with the sale of the building at 475  N. Third St. that houses the David City Police Department.

The issue helped to bring about 30 people to the council chambers.
The building will be placed up for bid with the sale to be decided in July.

Although the bidding is open to interested buyers, the presumed buyer in the sale is Henningsen Foods, which has reported that it will pay up to $50,000 for the building. Sealed bids will be opened on July 3.

Aquinas girls cruise to district title

For the most part, it turned out to be a good day for the Aquinas and East Butler girls track teams at the District C-1 meet at Memorial Field Thursday.
The Monarchs won six events and placed second in six others to cruise to the district championship.

Aquinas scored 171 points, finishing well ahead of Yutan, which scored 119.5.
"If you had told me two weeks ago that this would happen, I probably wouldn't have believed you," Aquinas Coach John Svec said. "We had injuries. We had illnesses. But we got people back and our whole team responded."
The Tigers scored 68 points to place third.

County helping with senior services program merger

The County Board of Supervisors is working with the Butler County Senior Services Program and the David City Seniors on plans to merge the two local groups that are intended to improve the quality of life for local senior citizens.

Linda Vandenberg, director of the county program, visited with the board on Monday and presented the bylaws to the board on Monday. Supervisors agreed that forming by merging the two groups together, a new set of bylaws would need to be created. The merger has the support of the Lincoln Area Agency on Aging, which works with the senior groups.
